Travel League Information

LYBA currently sponsors travel teams for fourth, fifth, and six grade for both boys and girls. Travel teams consist of a select group of players that will likely play up to 20 games in the Cincinnati Premier Youth Basketball League (CPYBL). In normal seasons, there are at least two practices per week, and two games on most weekends. LYBA has secured some weekly outside gym time for travel teams which could require players to drive 20-30 minutes to practice or play games. All travel teams usually participate in the season-ending tournament. In addition, most travel teams play in a pre-season tournament and a holiday tournament over the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays.

The number of teams at each grade level for each gender is dependent upon the number and quality of the participants at each grade level for each gender. Participation for these teams is on a tryout basis.

Any boy or girl who resides in the Loveland School District and who is in the fourth, fifth or sixth grade, may tryout for the travel teams. If selected, you will be placed on a select team to play games against other area select teams. Opponents will generally be within a 30 minute drive from Loveland.

Required Commitment

If an individual is selected to play on an LYBA Travel Team, that individual is required to maintain 100% commitment to that team. In the event of missed LYBA practices or games due to the participation in any other activity, it is at the discretion of the Travel Coach and/or Travel Director to conduct a review. If the review does not find a satisfactory commitment from that individual to his/her LYBA Travel Team, dismissal from the team will occur for that individual with no refund of his/her registration fees.

All tryout results will be posted on our website. Results will not be listed by player name as players will be identifiable only by their tryout number. Participants will also be notified by email. Players will be given a 48 hour window to reply with their intention to participate on the team, as well as pay their registration fees for the season. Please be advised that at this time, the player will be advised whether they have been chosen to participate on the A (Orange) Team, or the B (Black) Team (if there are two teams at that player's level).

At this point, coaches for the Travel Teams will not have been selected by the board, so players will not know who the coach for their team will be prior to accepting a position on the team. Coaches will be determined after players have been placed on teams and the board will review the candidates that have registered to coach (Head or Assistant).

There is no fee to register for the travel tryouts. Once a player is selected for a team the travel registration fee will be due within 48 hours. In addition to the travel registration fee you will be required to purchase a new, non-refundable travel uniform (~$60-$75) or use a previously purchased travel uniform.

Any player that withdraws from the Travel Program once practices start will not receive a refund.  Refunds may be considered and/or prorated after practices begin should LYBA be forced to modify or cancel the season based on factors out of their control.

Need based scholarships for the travel program registration fee are available on a case by case basis. A copy of your Direct Certification Notification letter from the District Food Service Director is needed to qualify for an LYBA scholarship. Please contact the LYBA Treasurer at [email protected] if you feel your child may qualify.

Travel Tryouts

Tryout Sessions

In order to minimize the number of people in the building, we will not allow parents or siblings in the gym or hallways during the tryouts. The only exception to this is that there will be short Parent/Player Expectation Meeting conducted by the Travel Coordinators during the first few minutes of the initial tryout for each grade level. Parents for all participants must plan on attending this meeting to gain an understanding of what the commitment and behavioral expectations are for both the players and parents of those selected to represent Loveland in CPYBL.

Please plan on dropping your player off no more than 15 minutes prior to their tryout time. You may escort your player back to the gym, leave the building during tryouts, then return and meet your player in the hallway when it is over.

Tryouts will be broken out into two parts :

Drills: Selected drills during tryouts will allow for concentrated display of ability in all areas of basketball. A variety of drills will keep players interested in seeking perfection, preventing boredom and complacency. This will give evaluators the opportunity to see all aspects of the player’s ability. Drills will cover both offensive and defensive skill areas. Every drill will give the player the ability to display his/her skills for game situations.

Controlled Scrimmages: During controlled scrimmages participants will be broken up and selected by the organizer of the try-outs at random. Skills will continue to be assessed by each evaluator during a set amount of time.

Selecting and Evaluating Players

Tryout evaluations will be conducted by three or four evaluators. These evaluators have been selected by the LYBA board. Each evaluator will have an evaluation sheet that will score players abilities in designated areas. Evaluators are not allowed to evaluate their own child. At the end of the tryout period each evaluator will recommend up to 25 players based on their assessment of each player over their try out days.

The top 16-20 players will be placed on two teams. A third team of 8-10 players may be added based on the discretion of the evaluators, based on talent level, and as approved by the board. Factors that will be considered regarding team development include: the talent level of the prospective players, available gym space for practicing, and available coaches. If a player decides not to commit to the Travel Team for which they are selected, the next highest rated player will be offered a spot on the team.

The number of days required for a participant to attend

Registrants are only required to attend one of the two days designated for their age group/gender for try outs. However, it is highly recommended that they attend both days if possible, so they can be evaluated effectively. If your child is not able to attend both days, please notify the evaluators at check-in so that they will know to fully evaluate your child on that night.
